I was walking across 5th Avenue last night when something in the window of Blanc de Chine caught my eye. Never been in the store–and the e-boutique hasn’t launched yet–but the clothes in their displays always have that structured, minimalist feel I love so much.
This time I noticed their simple use of a black scarf to jazz up an otherwise plain red evening dress. Keep it in mind next time you’re getting fancy. Jewelry isn’t the only thing that can make a statement.
Choose a delicate fabric–any kind of silk works or a VERY lightweight cashmere. Stay away from outdoorsy knit scarves or anything too chunky.
Wear open and dangling around the neck, and when you get chilly, you can wrap loosely around your shoulders. Choose a scarf in a color or pattern that stands out from the hue of the dress. If the dress is red, for example, a jet black scarf would really pop. Or you can opt for a rich print or subtle metallic detail if your dress is in a calmer solid, like black or grey.
